We had to understand why burial practices were important, what they signified to people, and why somebody coming in with a moon suit saying, don’t bury your dead this way, the way you’ve been doing it for thousands of years, may not immediately work. And it occurred to me what designers would do if they were working on that problem is never look at data sets, but would go into people’s home, and make conjectures, and work their way towards a solution. And, to me, bringing those two things together would be good for public health and good for design. Whether it’s my research, whether it’s the work that I do as a director of a global health institute, as a leader at the school, all of it has, I think, has been influenced by design.

Our review of 52 PSE HEAL initiatives describes their key characteristics and maps the I+PSE action components most commonly included in the intervention-to-evaluation activities. It also characterizes these initiatives’ achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. The review concludes by summarizing the evaluation matches and missed opportunities to strengthen the evidence for their outcomes.
